August is over tomorrow? Less than a month until autumn officially begins? Where did my summer go?!
Oh, right, it vanished into the abyss, the ways summers tend to do even when you’re an adult and no longer have to worry about things like school or summer vacations.
August wasn’t all bad, though. Here’s a breakdown of what I accomplished here this past month.
The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy, by Yoshitaka Amano
The Weight of Souls, by Bryony Pearce (4/5 cups)
Shoggoths in Bloom, by Elizabeth Bear (5/5 cups)
Shift, by Kim Curran (3/5 cups)
A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness (5/5 cups)
Quicksilver, by R J Anderson (4/5 cups)
A Discourse in Steel, by Paul S Kemp (4/5 cups)
The Dirty Streets of Heaven, by Tad Williams (plus giveaway!) (5/5 cups)
So, 8 books reviewed, and I also read a total of 7. Though I do have about 3 more that are more than 75% done that should be finished in the next week, and I read most of them in August. But I’m not counting them since I didn’t finish them this month.
I did a guest post over at Bookworm Blues, talking about the positive things that reading speculative fiction has taught me. (Warning: some soul-bearing and talk of a less-than-great upbringing, if those are triggers you may have.) I also was fortunate enough to be invited to participate in an SF Signal Mind Meld, where we shared opinions about our favourite female protagonists.
Speaking of SF Signal, I was also asked to become a regular contributer to their blog, which made me have a
minor major moment of squeepanic. But once I calmed down enough to think rationally again, I accepted, so every once in a while you may see my reviews over there now, too.
I also managed to keep up with 2 readalongs, which impressed me, since my reading time got seriously curtailed when I went back to work. Here are my questions for Scott Lynch’s The Lies of Locke Lamora (chapters 1-4, 5-8, and 9-12), and also the questions for George R R Martin’s Game of Thrones (chapters 29-43 and 44-58).
Next month I don’t have anything too special planned. I do plan to start blogging and reviewing over at SF Signal, and I’ll link to the things that I post there, so you can enjoy my off-blog posts as much as my on-blog posts. I’ll be finished up the readalongs for The Lies of Locke Lamora and Game of Thrones, so expect the final sets of questions plus a final whole-book review for each of them. There’ll probably be 5-6 reviews alongside them, too.
Hope your Augusts were as productive as mine!
