I have a friend. A very good friend. Let’s call him V, for argument’s sake. V is in need of, among other things, a kidney transplant. He’s on the transplant list, which is, in a sense, good, but the wait time is considerably less than good.

I don’t know how much any of you out there know about kidney failure. There’s a lot of good information here, but in a nutshell, when your kidneys are failing, you’re tired a lot. You itch. You have a poor appetite, weight loss, and you retain fluids. As things get worse, you can develop difficulty breathing, vomiting, and your kidneys no longer will function enough to keep you alive. Dialysis helps. There are some medications that help. Sometimes the damage can be reversed, if things are caught early enough. Other times, transplants are the patient’s only hope.

V was at the Canada Day celebrations, trying to raise money for the Canadian Kidney Foundation. I donated. How could I not? But it didn’t feel like enough, and I want to go one step further, to do more to help raise money for the foundation that’s going to help my friend.

So here’s what I’ve got in mind: blog fundraiser with book giveaway! Here’s the rundown!

  • The giveaway will be open internationally!
  • For every dollar (CDN) that you donate to the Kidney Foundation, you get 1 entry in the draw.
  • I will round up! Since the gveaway is international, if you donate an amount that comes to more than an even figure after the exchange rate, I’ll give you an extra entry. (For example, if you donate an amount worth $1.16 CDN, you get 2 entries.)
  • Donate directly to the organization through this link and choose “general donation”
  • Once you’ve donated, email me a copy of the confirmation so that I can record the total amount donated for this fundraiser and keep track of all the entries.
  • Contest will run until July 31, 2011

    Bonus entries available:

  • +1 entry for Tweeting about the giveaway.
  • +5 entries for making a blog post about this entry.

For bonus entries, you have to have donated at least $1 first. Please include the links to your Tweet and/or blog post when you email me the confirmation of donation.

All entry emails must be sent to: jazriyah(at)gmail(dot)com to qualify!

So what’s up for grabs in this? Let’s take a look!

Empire is in hardcover, all the others are paperback.

Also, I’ll thrown in a “your name in Japanese” bookmark done by a local artist, personalized to whoever wins!

Any help you can give in this is appreciated. Even $1 can make a difference here!
