Day 2 – Your favourite character

This is a tough one to answer. I can pick favourite characters out of a single book, or a series, but a single favourite character across everything I’ve read? That takes some work!

I think, though, that when all is said and done, my favourite character of all time is probably Herald-Mage Vanyel Ashkevron.

This guy can also fit safely into the niche belonging to my first genre crush, if you want to know the truth of it. When I first read the Last Herald-Mage books, I think I was 14, and was drawn into the story and the world so completely that I didn’t want to come out again. And it wasn’t just because I was fascinated by the fantasy world that Mercedes Lackey wove. If I’d started on the Valdemar books at any other trilogy, I don’t know if I’d have been so impressed, and it was Vanyel who ultimately made the biggest impression on me.

This guy goes from Emo Kid to Heroic Badass in a couple of decades. He carries a tremendous burden, loss and responsibility and fear. And unlike some great heros of literature, he’s also very human, with flaws and foibles and weird little eccentricities. I cried at his death scene. I still tear up when I reach that part of the trilogy.

What really decided the issue of putting him in the spot of being my favourite character is ultimately this: if I find out that there’s a short story involving him in any of the Valdemar anthologies, I will buy it just to read the story. If he gets a mention in any other novel, I feel like twinge of fangirlish glee in my gut. No other character really evokes that kind of reaction in me, at least not yet. Maybe someday Vanyel will lose his place at the top of the list and have to move over for a newcomer.

…Can’t see that happening any time soon, though.

  1. I saw this awesome meme at floor to ceiling books and thought I would weigh in here as well since you started it.

This really is extremely tough. I was thinking Parmenian from Gemmell's Lion of Macedon, then Azure or Stardrifter from Sara Douglass' Axis trilogy.

After much internal debate. I have decided my all time favourite character is Nighteyes from Robin Hobb's Farseer novels. While I thought all my previous favourites were awesome in their own right with layers of depth, I really loved that wolf and everything about him.
