Smashing Saturday Shorts (3) – Part 2

Bloodlust, by Larissa Ione

Summary: Sir Brynn of Lochland has been captured by an evil vampire queen who wants to use him as her newest blood slave. But a warrior to the bone, Brynn intends to fight her every step of the way. Can Brynn’s willpower remain intact when pitted against Sorla’s superior vampire strength, seductive skills, and underhanded cruelty, or will she ultimately take possession of both his mind…and body?

Thoughts: Okay, so since Valentine’s Day is so close, I figured I had to throw in a little erotica here. One that may as well have a few of my own particular kinks in it. Yes, like vampires.

And I ended up picking a pretty good one! Even if the title’s the cheesiest thing since Kraft Dinner.

I admit I’m not usually much for the smutty stuff, since most of the smut I’ve ever read has been, well, smut with a flimsy excuse for a plot tying it all together. Or not even that much. If you’re going to read porn-in-prose, it may as well be in the form of a short story, at least by my way of thinking.

And Larissa Ione has a talent for description, which, naturally, comes to play during sex scenes. Her writing style is smooth, and the characters are developped as well as they can be in such a short space where most of the words relate to sex. It doesn’t necessarily stand out, but that also means it’s not spectacularly bad. It’s been my experience that erotica is all too easy to turn terrible.

It suffers, however, where nearly all porn suffers. You can’t know that a nubbin is an unripe kernel of corn without having that word ruined forever when you read it in smutfics, for example, and quite frankly, I can’t imagine how Brynn managed to do some of the things that he did with open wounds. And given my soft spot for vampires, I can appreciate bloodplay as much as the next person, but the thought of blood running down somebody’s private parts is just not sexy. It actually borders on pretty creepy.

Definitely a piece of fiction for women rather than men, I think, at least as a general rule, and even moreso for those who really get a kick out of vampires. For me, it’s a take-it-or-leave-it situation, but I can still see the merit and strength behind the prose, even if it isn’t completely my thing.
